Kohima is the capital city of India's north eastern state of Nagaland. It is the second largest city in the state. Kohima was founded in 1878 when the British Empire established its headquarters of the then Naga Hills. It officially became the capital after the state of Nagaland was inaugurated in 1963.

Subsequently the people from Phom community started to come and settle in Kohima to serve the state government also to find other avenues for their livelihood. However, as the times passed by, they gradually encountered one major impediment, i.e., their spiritual health. They found themselves out of place in a strange land to worship in other Churches due to communication hurdle. Henceforth, the pioneers from Phom and Konyak community reached an agreement or resolved to meet their own spiritual needs by coming together; eventually a joint fellowship of Phom and Konyak was established in 1972.

However, as there was no designated Church building of its own, hence Sunday prayer fellowship was initially held at Chakhesang Baptist Church and later shifted to Khasi Baptist Church. As such, a combined prayer fellowship of two tribes took root which continued till February 1978. With the passage of time along with the increase of members, it was mutually decided to part ways and established a respective fellowship of its own.

Hence, a Farewell-cum-Closing fellowship programme between Phom and Konyak community was held on 5th February 1978. As per the record of the Church, the independent Kohima Phom Baptist Fellowship was born on 12 February 1978 at Assam Rifle Camp, Midlane, Kohima. Subsequently, on 29 January 1986, Kohima Phom Baptist Church was recognized as a fully fledged Church under Phom Baptist Christian Association. 12 February 1978 is a historic, monumental and significant day for the family of KPBC, because it was the first Sunday Devotional worship service held by the Phoms living in Kohima and thereafter, a regular Sunday prayer fellowship to this far.
